Sex on the internet is both rampant and a potential minefield. Liability for minors seeing it. Liability for images of underaged persons (and some seventeen year olds look much older). Filtering companies throwing your websites into their block lists for the slightest hint of skin. Google has taken stands on a number of issues; I guess they're taking a pass on this one.

Yeah, Tumblr is navigating it. This really to me screams that Google doesn't have a good way to monetize it. And they don't have a good way to monetize it because advertisers don't want it. And advertisers these days seem to be primarily interested in serving malware, which means that these are potential customers that even the malware vendors don't want.
