Just because it's what I do right now, and because I've recently gained some knowledge that will send me off in search of trousers that actually fit me: An article on Levi's changing the fit of 501 jeans.

How about telling me how I can gains some knowledge on finding well fitting trousers. It seems like all the buyers out there think that as one's waist size expands one's legs get shorter.

I'm not quite sure how to find 'em, but I recently learned that my problem is that the crotch to waist length on most of my trousers is too long. I like trousers with enough hip room to give myself flexibility, and on some clothes I had a friend make for me I've actually added an extra gusset in the crotch seam, but it turns out that the distance from my hip to the bottom of my butt and my crotch is small, which is why most non-baggy pants feel like they bind on me.

Ah man.... I'm a diehard 501 guy too. And they've always been hard to find in 40 x 34. Bummer.... a good pair of 501s is like an extension of your skin.

Hey, we wear the same size. I'm determined to lose another two inches off my waist just so I can wear 38s. 38x34 are a good bit easier to find. Drew, my son, wears 34x34 and that size also happens to be difficult to find in the styles he wears.

I lost faith in Levi's some years ago, when I could no longer find the non-preshrunk 501's in any store. At one point they tried having their own stores, with exclusively Levi's merchandise - remember those? - and those were glorious, but apparently they tanked. That was the last gasp of the non-preshrunk 501s. (Yes, they fit me if I buy preshrunk, but not as well. I wear them before washing them, see, with the cuffs rolled up, and let them stretch in the right places a bit. Gradually, in the wash/wear cycle, the shrink-to-fit ones come to fit me perfectly.)

The REAL reason Levi's has screwed with 501's, of course, is that earlier this year I found Denim Express and managed to stock up on a few pairs of the good stuff. This is clearly in violation of the rule of the universe which says that you must not be able to fit your jeans properly ... just as I find the motherlode, they change the rules.

What really made me angry was when the 540 model disappeared entirely a few years back. I went for years hopping from brand to brand, then when I finally found one that fit well Levi pulled the plug.
