Subject: reducing telemarketing calls and mails
listening to Forum on KQED, i learned that a vanishingly small number of Americans (less than 2%) want to stop junk mail and junk calls to their homes.
this info came from a representative of the Direct Marketing Association, proving once again that spin is in.
anyway, you may register with a do-not-call file by sending your name(s), home address, and home telephone number (including area code) and signature in a letter or on a postcard to:
Telephone Preference Service
Direct Marketing Association
P.O. Box 9014
Farmingdale, NY 11735-9014
you can also register with a do-not-mail file by mailing your name(s) and home address and signature in a letter or on a postcard to: Mail Preference Service
Direct Marketing Association
P. O. Box 9008
Farmingdale, NY 11735-9008
which, of course, gives them your name, address and phone number! it might be worth it. and you can't call, nor is there an easy web submittal, because why would they want to make it easy?
the dma rep claimed that they have to have your signature. just think of all those malicious pranksters who would be stopping all that valuable junk mail unbeknownst to all those folks who live for it...
the direct mail association has a web site:
the info about the do-not-bug-me files is in the consumer section.
i also learned about a phone number you can call to stop all unsolicited credit card offers. unfortunately, i have forgotten the number. if any of you get this far in this and know it, let me know. thx.
