Dan rants: Susie Bright at Cody's

Went to see Susie Bright at Cody's last night as she was hawking her new book Full Exposure .

The crowd was smaller than I expected, fairly well mixed in terms of couples, singles, and apparent sexual preference. She talked for a little over an hour, I and my guest didn't feel like hanging out for the signings, so I bought the book and wandered.

I haven't had a chance to look at the book yet, but Susie had some interesting comments. The one that stuck with me was that we expect children to understand that we can love others and still love them, but our cultural model of love means that lovers have different expectations.

She speaks well, anecdotes appropriate to the questions without seeming overly polished. Her readings had a lot of parenting sort of issues, since her daughter is 8 or so now I guess that makes sense.

A few good notes on the repetition of the old tired romance myths, why we're still replaying the demure, confusing the "no" meaning maybe with the "no" meaning no (and how this leads to rape).

I'm blanking right now and will try to remember more later, and I'll give a full accounting of the book when I'm done with it.
