Making
Tetrahydrocannabinol, or at least a specific process for it, is
"Patent Pending". with lines like: "..Thus there is a need for a short, practical, high-yielding synthesis of .DELTA..sup.9-THC that can be practised on an industrial scale. "
My college chemistry is extremely oxidized, but the processes described at the bottom of the patent application look "do-able".
If the economics and associated risk factors of the process are favorable, there could be a lot of "pot" on the streets from this.

With a process like this, it'll probably be less expensive to synthesize THC in a vat than it would be to grow pot and extract the stuff. Marinol "OTCs" will be everywhere. But that won't be all; many people will want their dose the traditional way. Supply it in a liquid form and let people put it in their own tobacco. It won't be resinous and there'll be no way to tell by the smell. Is the Law going to start random-sampling people's Marlboros?

Borrowing another flutterbarian's phrase regarding cannibis smoking: "great drug, lousy delivery method".

I'm thinking this isn't gonna flood the market with nice groovy, gooey brownies because if you start ordering significant amounts of Olivetol..... you're going to get a visit from a friendly, but curious, DEA agent.
Moreover, TRYING to get someone to sell you some "(+)-p-mentha-2-ene-1,8-diol" (or even likely precursors) would probably be futile and would probably raise some DEA eyebrows also.

One of marijuana's "saving graces" is that supply centers can be close to demand centers. The stuff grows like a weed ;)
Most other drugs the efforts in control are placed on stopping importation or restricting production. It's easy to restrict production and transportation when the quantities are large and there are obvious red-flags (like pseudoephidrine for ethamphetamine).
A market for synthetic THC won't ever take off because it can easily be controlled.
