For you guys in California, my mother recently sent me a link to this MLS listing: a recent built (but unfinished) log cabin on 5 acres for $38K. Browsing that agent's site lead me to this listing: a recent remodeled 2000sq ft house on 50+ acres with two mobile homes for $250K. What does $250K get you in the Bay area? How much would 50+ acres go for?!? I think we're talking about several orders of magnitude difference...

Yeah, people have been talking about the housing prices in the Northeast, but the house I went to high school from is closer to Manhattan than many people in California commute, the MLS lists it at over 3k square feet (that's gotta include the basement), it was on an acre in a really nice neighborhood, and is currently valued at about half a mil.
Economic friction is wacky.

These houses are comparable to the log cabin.
Wait, I guess the cabin doesn't come with that must-have feature: bars!
My grandfather's finished cabin in upstate New York sold to family for around $40k a couple of years ago... are you sure Upstate NY isn't seeing housing inflation?

Might be where in upstate. As someone who grew up in Eastern New York, I'd hesitate before calling these "upstate", I'd call 'em southern Finger Lakes.

Upstate NY is a huge area; perhaps not as big as many of the Western states, but it's possible to be as far away from NYC while still being in the state as is the distance from LA to SF. Think about THAT commute.

When I lived in Plattsburgh, NY, I used to think Upstate New York meant "the Adirondacks or places where they end sentences in 'Eh'". But my wife, who lived in NYC for eight years, says that Upstate New York means "not The City".
