I can see getting impact data from crashing cars into barriers, but I'm wondering what the point of doing this was. It seems the only discernible information I can imagine is the penetration depth of an F4 into a structure during a kamikaze situation.

I think some people have suggested that it was a way to test containment vessels for nuclear reactors against the possibility of kamikaze attacks.
I think it's also worth looking at in the context of "how much airframe would you expect to find after crashing, say, a 737 into a building".
But big explosions are also just plain cool!
