What do they mean?

It means that they make their decisions based on whatever urban legends, myths, sky fairies, rumors and smears that they happen to hear or invent, that happen to dovetail with their world view, without bothering to check upon outside reality. Also called following the gut instincts. All of us do that to some extent, but the righteous believe their bowels are moved by a god. I wish that I had a supernatural being who communicated special information to me. But I would hope that this force would signal me through cleaner ways than my intestines.

Commercial plugs are fine, if they are relevant to the conversation, and if you don't try to pretend to be a consumer.
