While I'm certainly sympathetic to his plight wouldn't a will take care of the part about his partners parents taking half the house?

Yeah, it sure seems to me like there's a lot a good lawyer can do in those circumstances. However, inheritance in practice seems to have a lot less to do with contracts than it does with blood.
And just to re-iterate: I'll rabidly support a proposal to abolish all government recognition of marriage and replace the structures of marriage with civil contracts.

Oh, I'm fully with you on the part of replacing the government recognition of marriage with civil contracts. I've never thought of my marriage as a legal structure but as a religious covenant. Having the government involved in my religious covenants just strikes me as wrong.
