The streamlining of an existing ferryboat reminds me of the pride of lake Michigan, the USS Wolverine, the only paddlewheel aircraft carrier ever built. It was an old lake steamer with a flight deck built on top so WW2 flyers could practice carrier landings, within sight of Chicago's Loop. My dad often saw it from the windows of the Santa Fe railroad HQ. Designated as an Unclassified Miscellaneous Auxiliary craft (surely the least inspiring ship class ever), it trained hundreds of navy flyers, including the elder President Bush.
