Hmmm... Hadn't really occurred to me, but my Google+ identity is not the same as what's on my birth certificate. Where do they draw the line? Are they birthers?

And "adult material"? I suffer with that kind of BS with my hosting company but I don't think it would be acceptable from the service that wants to take on my photos and writing... I hope Google gets their collective heads screwed on straight.

Kaliya "Identity Woman" Hamlin's account suspended.

Apparently, whoever is implementing this policy lives in a cave, or certainly has no contact whatsoever with professional technology circles.

This is why we (as a race) can't have nice things.

I'm still unsure of the absolute credibility of the people claiming to have lost their entire Google profiles, although there seems to be some suggestion from Google that this may happen if you put "adult material" in your other Google applications. Shudder.

Admittedly their sandbox. If they want to wake up some day and find that they have DUGG themselves a grave, or gotten KDE'd in the fight for users, that is their business. But to arbitrarily remove access to all of a users gmail and other data, without recourse or ability to download the data is an extreme violation. In doing so, Google has destroyed their reputation. Do something that Google doesn't like on any of their services, and all your data is vaporized. Who needs that?

In thinking about this more, I believe that it ties back to the basic misunderstandings about identity and identifier that Google+ exhibits I've mentioned earlier.

Google is trying to create a community with highly proscribed rules. Google+'s rules make it like a formal church, or a courtroom, or a legislature's chambers. I like venues more like dive bars or local cafes, and if some sort of decorum is more acceptable, like a living room chat or dinner with friends.

I spend a few hours a month in my town council chambers, and I question the wisdom of that every time I do. I spend an hour or three a day in my local cafe. If Google+ continues to be analogous to the former venue, then it's going to have to show some serious value on that front.
