Hurricane Irene

My grandfather on my mother's side was involved in the Red Cross and emergency services
agencies in the New York City area for most of his life. The last time I talked with him
(before he died), one of the concerns he was still interested in was what would happen if a
hurricane and storm surge hit New York City, burying Rockaway and portions of Brooklyn in
ways that'd rival how Katrina hit New Orleans.
Hopefully, this won't be that weekend, but if I lived in the area the storm track for
Hurricane Irene would make me want to nail up some plywood and get the hell off the
islands for the next few days.

Given that the aforementioned grandfather was involved in that disaster preparedness, I'm not surprised.
Current storm track makes it look like NC is gonna get hit, the Chesapeake Bay might see a little action, but nothing terribly major.

I don't know, there's a big difference between a Cat 5 storm and a Cat 1 storm. There should be a huge difference in wind speed and barometric pressure differentials between Irene and Katrina. Also you need to consider preparedness. The recent earthquake shows that NYC is much more prepared to face natural disasters than NOLA.
