Yeah, it was particularly sparked by seeing Paper Passion: Perfume for Book Lovers (Via Laughing Squid, from @jjg), and realizing that the analogue to many of the arguments about grain and texture that I heard back then was very very strong.

Even movies are (I believe) mostly devoid of a film medium.

Yep. I recently ended up at a film that was actually film, and the gate weave and tram lines and such was an amazing experience. Not that I'm fond of the pixels and codec artifacts of the modern digital projector, the experience was very much "oh, wow, this is what I remember 'going to the movies' as being!", but once you've been away from those traits for a while, going back to them is almost glaring.
