An early experience of mine: Newly arrived in Germany as a Werkstudent (summer intern) with some classroom German behind me, I needed a ruler to do a task @ work. After consulting the English - German dictionary, I confidently asked my boss for a Herrscher. Confusion ensues - back to dictionary, now German - English, to learn that examples of a Herrscher are king, queen, emperor, etc. Duly chastised, ask for a Lineal.
