RT @Medley:
Listen here, young fella', I don't have TIME to go to STORES and deal
with CLERKS. Just. No. It's 2012. Dropship that sucker. Now.
Saved here because I've been having the "retail is dead" discussion with people. It's all just crystal-ball-ism, but I'm running into this attitude more and more.

Heh. "Dicks Sporting Goods". I had to call the store, from inside the store, to get some assistance.

Yeah, but its truthiness in reinforcing my prejudices was so apropos that I was willing to take it a bit out of context...
But, yeah: I'm now printing out pages from Amazon so I remember the details when I go down to order the book from my local bookstore. It is only raw prejudice against Amazon and for my local vendor that is keeping me going.

To be fair, that quote from me is a bit out of context - I still find retail useful for an (admittedly small and select) set of things. But that particular annoyance was because I wanted an already-purchased defective device replaced one-for-one. No need to trudge into a mall for that.
On the other hand, I was getting frustrated the other day trying to shop for my kid's clothes online. So I went to the local department store and found NOTHING that was satisfactory. So much for that experiment.

Stores are going to have to provide what you can't get online:
what petronius is looking for - instant gratification, even more instant than overnight drop shipping - let me get my stuff and get out, don't talk to me;
or an experience...feed me, entertain me, let's interact and have fun. Oh, and yes, cordial and knowledgeable customer service as well.

There was a news story not that long ago where Target Corp was training employees to be better
at dealing with the public because their main competition is not some other retail store, but
Amazon.com. "You have to be more charming than a computer!"
So yeah, I can totally see "retail is dead."

We went shopping for a new elliptical Sunday afternoon. I've worn and weathered mine out. While I was shopping online for info, I wanted to get a feel for size and how they were actually manufactured.
I think I want (subject to change) one of these:
Kettler EXT7 units. But will have to order one online on research and faith.
"Dicks Sporting Goods" sold low end junk and had no customer service or info at all. We could not get waited on at all. Most of their demo units were borken.
We also walked into:
Physique Fitness where J. Jackson made me remember what a knowledgeable sincere and helpful salesperson was like. He made me want the True M30, but alas, while it is compact, it is too wide to fit where I need to put it. I hope to go back soon and look at some other units now that we have some measurements we know we need to fit into and other options. And yes, I expect to pay a little more for that process. I don't mind when it has value.

Well, this is a bit like my annoyance with the checkout clerks at the supermarket asking how I am today. I just want to ring up my stuff and get out. I don't know if I am getting cantankerous as I approach 62 or the world is speeding up.
