Ran straight X11 for years -- it was easy to set up under Gentoo (which is sort of like rolling your own distro). Sharing the computer now, though, and feeling the ubuntu/unity/gnome pain.

Sigh, that's probably the right answer. But it also feels like it's just enabling bad behavior, like Gnome will sense the amount of RAM I have and expand to make the machine just barely unusable no matter how much I have.
That rant, by the way, was brought to you by watching the various Gnome processes taking minutes to clean up after themselves while restarting a machine with 8 Gig of RAM.

Talk about wasted resources... Just buy more RAM, Dan...
