Today in US: Boy, 5, kills sister, 2, with special kid rifle. Accident. Girl, 16, does science experiment, nobody hurt, charged as felon.
First incident, Second incident (more, more).
And tracking down those articles, I also realized... anyone else notice the skin color of those involved in the two incidents?

The 5 year old with a .22 - Tragic loss and accident by the parents in so many ways, I can't even comprehend the pain and issues involved. Charging the parents with anything won't help, but might be apropos.
The 16 year old girl testing the truth of "don't mix these things, bad stuff might happen", outside.... needs an administrative slap for not involving her teachers/mentors, not a felony rap. She might need placement in an advanced chemistry class, better instructors/mentors and less hysterical school administration and legal system.
We need more science, technology, chemistry, physica.. interest in school. Not this over-reaction catalyzed by hysteria.
To think that in high school, in my time (I sound so old), we did black powder based experiments, pure sodium experiments.. ignited magnesium, copper sulfate and all kinds of mixtures... safely with excellent instructors... Sigh.

I think it's a rifle for hunting special kids. Actually I think it's probably a .22 that's smaller and lighter. I remember learning to shoot (with strong parental supervision and attention to safety) a gorgeous walnut stock bolt action .22 that was quite a handful, and I was older than 5.
Of note: The prosecutor of the Kiera Willmot case is one Terry Glotfelty. Ms. Glotfelty recently did not bring charges against a white 15 year old who shot and killed his 10 year old brother with a BB gun.
Damn this looks a lot like Ms. Willmot is being prosecuted for trying to learn something in school while being black and female.

The rifle in question is a Davey Crickett manufactured by Keystone. It's a single-shot, bolt-action .22 rifle sized for youth and backpackers.
