For years conspiracy mongers have been after HAARP, an Alaska based DARPA program to bombard the upper atmosphere with microwaves to probe its secrets. It has been accused of causing Hurricanes Sandy, Katrina and Rita, the Haiti Earthquake, controlling people's minds, and of threatening to "capsize the world". Well, it turns out there was a huge conspiracy! Just not one everybody expected.

OK, what I want to know is why the automated Related Topics list for this story included Personal Lubrication? The inclusion of Sandy, Rita, Katrina and probe in one entry?

Grins. I'm not sure, the topic suggester isn't very sophisticated. I have thought occasionally about trying to use bogofilter or something smarter, maybe something with a little notion of Markoff chains, to try to do categorization. Especially since I did a bunch of correcting the categorizer early on, but have largely ignored it since.
To the front page topic, two things I love about this story:
- Ted Stevens.
- The reminder that there's a lot of politicization of science for personal gain, especially in that cross-over with defense contracting. How many times have we been told that this time, for real, the Lawrence Livermore labs hot fusion experiments are going to net produce energy? No, really, this time? Well, okay, but next time, for sure.
