I thought we'd settled this decades ago, but: 'Crack baby' study ends with unexpected but clear result. It ain't crack, it's poverty.
To be fair, I thought that we'd settled it as "it ain't crack, it's nicotine", but I could easily see that being enough of a confounding factor that it'd be hard to factor out.

A 7lb "crack baby" ain't a crack baby like I used to see in the Cook County Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in the 1986... I'll contend that these were the "cream" of the crack baby crop with parents that got involved in a study and were trying. I can still remember (nightmares) 4lb-ish crack babies going through withdrawal symptoms in incubators. I worked exclusively in that unit for a solid week and told my boss I couldn't do it. His response was "wow, you lasted 7 days, a new record". For a reward, I was assigned the research department where I modified equipment to monitor dogs being used for experiments in "blood expanders".
