Dear lazy web: Given CNC router with TTL stepper inputs, what's the easiest way to feed that gcode? Arduino+??? Some other device?

Suggestions from the intarwebs so far:

http://smoothieware.org/ is an ARM based CNC controller that's currently in kickstarter phase. They've already shipped one load of controllers, but I'm really wanting something more off-the-shelf.
http://www.ecklersoft.com/ers.html looks like off-the-shelf and works, even if not the most modern high performance thing in the world.
http://dank.bengler.no/-/page/show/5470_grbl is software for an Arduino 328. Claims to do fairly high performance acceleration ramping and precision timing on the steppers. So far I'm liking this option the best.
