I feel kind of bad for the folks that made Threes, which 2048 is a rip-off. What incentive do small, independent developers have knowing that a good idea will just immediately get ripped off (and get all the press).
(sorry for the huffpo link, but it does cover the story) http://www.huffingtonpost.com/...hrees-iphone-game_b_5064541.html

Damn. I DIDN'T know about the game. I just wasted several hours trying to beat it WITHOUT looking at the AI.
That thing is crack for the right kind of mind. But I didn't know about 'Threes' either.

Fascinating. I'd seen a screen dump of "Threes", thought "oh, they must have made it more complex to make that make sense". Watched a video of it, and it looks like there are differences from 2048 in how the sliding works, too.
But it's interesting that the HuffPo article makes the comparison to Flappy Bird, because that game mechanic has been around for 30 years, and whatever made it viral isn't the over-arching concept.
Which is just the long way of saying "I've got no idea what will motivate small indy game shops".

(And now that I'm thinking "okay, so I wonder what Threes is all about" and looking around the Android Play store and seeing all of the direct knock-offs, I've got less sympathy for the "2048 ripped off Threes" argument: There's a lot of exact same game out there that's way more blatantly a straight rip-off.)

So, related: I haven't been terribly excited about 3d printing in general, but for a certain class of hardware, high cost low production run, it makes sense.
What's going to happen to IP for that stuff when it hits? http://hackaday.com/2014/04/07/3d-printed-camera-arm-saves-143/
