Lazily wondering if we had spent the money we've been spending in the middle east in the last 20 years on our own infrastructure and economy...
The South African term I have learned to respect is: "Non-reflective". As in you can shine a lot of light (money) at it, and get nothing back. It applies in many many ways.

My other thought is: Make the tax 1.00 even. How would that change our economy for the better and for the worse?

I think we can argue that a lot of the money we've been spending in the Middle East has been keeping petroleum prices artificially low... In a big way, that's yet another subsidy for the automobile.
I like the "non-reflective" metaphor...
