Our HP has given up the ghost. Are there any printers out there that don't suck? Weighing cost per page vs expected hardware lifespan...

The Brother HL-2170W (laser) I bought for less than $100 in 2006 is still going strong, though I don't print all that much. Don't know what the current model number is. The W stands for 'wireless', which is very handy.

Need color? If not, go with a Brother Laser of some sort. It'll probably out-last whatever protocols are used to speak to it.
If you do need color, I continue to recommend cheap inkjets (HP or Canon) which are sub-$50. When they clog or run out of ink, recycle and buy a new one.

We're currently using one of the cheap HPs. Charlene needed to print out a (large tiled) template, so just set it printing, and the printhead eventually unclogged, so we'll probably stay with it, but...
The "Get a Brother laser printer" sentiment has been so overwhelming that we may just go that way anyway.

I just replaced a 12 year old 1440 with a 2880 (oddly 2X) to get a wifi printer. The only feature I am missing is google cloud support. I'm very impressed.
