Soe does all of this peaceful arrest of A16 protestors thingie give anyone else the heebie-jeebies? Just a little too close to that old Star Trek episode about simulated war for my tastes...

The heebie-jeebies? Why? It happens at most big protests where the cops are cool. Happens at the School of the Americas protest at Ft Benning.
What that Excite article fails to mention, in lauding Exec Asst Chief Gainer, is that he was heard to have said on DC radio that the protesters would use the N-word to anger DC police, and that the police should resist the urge to retaliate. He's either an idiot who didn't even *try* to understand who the protesters are (people unlikely to talk like that in any situation) or he was evilly trying to scare the rank-and-file cops into overreacting.
Yeah, now that's helpful! :<

Given the reports I've seen, I'm sure there were lots of attempts to rile up the street cops by their higher ups. The old school police just love roughing up the hippies, any chance they can do that on a grander scale is something they won't pass up.

I don't know. I are you sure you want to link the protesters with hippies? I mean, the hippies of the 60's tending to have just a little more intelligence and understanding of the issue than most of the protesters again the IMF/World Bank.
There was one article where the reporter asked a bunch of the protesters what the IMF/World bank did, and none of them knew.
I guess I just have an issue with people protesting about an orginization which all the people they think they are helping seem to want and support.
