A lot of these ideas apply to Burning Man. One of my complaints about the local regional burn events is that they tend to be too comfortable - they have trees and grass and running water, no blasting sun or dust or windstorms. Without the challenge and pain, the experience does not compel me, and I sometimes wonder why people bother.
