Janell Brown reports that SDMI has been broken, this despite the general boycott. Is anyone out there not yet convinced that there is no technical solution to the problem of bypassing the standard distribution channels and that instead the content brokers need to look at ways to actually provide value to users? Or is that just too revolutionary to comprehend.

Any watermarking system that (1) lets you have samples of the audio before and after adding the watermark, and (2) is meant to be machine readable, is destined to fail. A properly designed watermark can be quite impervious to masking if the full details of its placement are kept secret. Such watermarks can survive conversion between different formats, and conversion to analog and back, and even averaging two or more watermarked copies together; while the result wouldn't be easily discernable, analysis would bring out the details.
