Edit 2: 404 Media: The Viral Smart Toothbrush Botnet Story Is Not Real

Three million malware-infected smart toothbrushes used in Swiss DDoS attacks — botnet causes millions of euros in damages

According to a recent report published by the Aargauer Zeitung (h/t Golem.de), around three million smart toothbrushes have been infected by hackers and enslaved into botnets. The source report says this sizable army of connected dental cleansing tools was used in a DDoS attack on a Swiss company’s website. The firm’s site collapsed under the strain of the attack, reportedly resulting in the loss of millions of Euros of business.

There are various people suggesting that this is a hoax, based on most of those toothbrushes apparently being BTLE? I don't know, but/and:

It sure seems like this sort of thing, coupled with that recent kerfluffle about an appliance maker who was worried about too much open source control stuff bouncing off their servers, means that we need to get back to some sort of personal computing where we're controlling our own data and not pushing it through external data miners all of the time.
