I've heard this quite a few times before actually...but then I have a lot of Irish friends.
For quite some time the Irish (on all sides of the Northern Ireland debate) have been saying that William was a more attractive candidate to the Pope of the time than James, because the Papacy was more political than religious at that time...James was allied with the wrong group of Catholics. More than likely, if he'd kept to himself and not gotten himself tied to France, Innocent would have supported him and history might be very, very different.

It's the big momma of all conspiracy theories. In the whole "Ruby killed Oswald to keep him quiet" continuum, the idea that the Catholic church would have backed the C of E over a Catholic King of England for political gain kinda blows the top off the scale. Makes the whole "Illuminati run the US government" idea tame by comparison.
