I've been reading Balance of Power by Chris Crawford and it's little ominous watching Argentina go down the drain. I know we are busy pounding the mountains in Tora Bora but it just seems very wierd to let a 2nd world country drop into chaos

I don't think we are "letting" anything happen in Argentina. Are we? I mean, if we go in and wipe out a debt to prop up a government that has angered its people to rioting aren't we continuing policies that have resulted in us having to pound the mountains in Tora Bora?

The World Bank has already tried propping up the country; it didn't help.
The fact is, Argentina, with its 30% VAT on top of an income tax, has endemic problems which can only be solved by a nice bankruptcy and reorganization. Unfortunately, while companies can often reorganize without incident, when it happens to a government things usually aren't so neat.
Based on the politics of the man who will be taking over the Presidency, I'd have to say the next government will be a quasi-benevolent dictatorship.
