Hardware rantings

A few random notes on hardware: part of my hate for the Mac could involve transferrence of the "get this thing to boot" stage of Intel hardware assembly. Because of that, I'd stopped off at CompUSA yesterday as I hadn't gotten the part I needed before the shops in Berkeley closed, and saw the new iMac. I now understand why everyone thinks it's ugly. In pictures, it's very cute, in person it's this huge monstrosity which makes that wonderful slim screen take up more desk space than a CRT.

Wow please tell my mom this! (OK, actually I'm going to quote you in an email to her). She's getting a new computer with an SBA grant and even though she's only experienced with Winblowz (an important consideration with a 50+ yr. old computer-illiterate) she has her heart set on the new iMac because she wants to "maximize her work space" and doesn't want a clunky old PC taking up said space. This takes away the one argument I couldn't win with her...the desktop space argument...particularly if she were to buy a flat-panel monitor to go with the PC.
And yes, Windows sucks, but please don't ask me to teach my mother to use Linux over the phone. I'm gonna have a hard enough time telling her how to set up an internet connection.

She should go look at them herself. I'll happily trade-off floor space for desk space, I guess I'd figured on a 12" or so screen from the pictures.

I actually like my new iMac....better than my Windows or Linux/KDE boxes.

"Everyone" doesn't think it's ugly.

Oh, all right: nearly everyone. At least among the Mac faithful who've seen it in person that I've talked to.
Dang it, leave me my illusions; my poorly documented probably inaccurate generalizations! You let Congress get away with it!
