I don't know about the reading habits issue. In the case of an already established invenstigation, the requests of law enforcement [mentioned in the Salon article] seemed perfectly reasonable to me. With the possible execption of the Amazon one - which I think could have been narrowed down a bit (they didn't really need records for all those people). But if you're already under investigation and that information if part of building the case, I don't have a problem with that.

All of those seemed to be part of collecting circumstantial evidence. Laying that on the Republican administration is a little unfair, but way too many people have been harrassed and even falsely convicted because their reading materials didn't mesh with community standards.
In other words: Pay cash and don't participate in tracking programs.
