America advances to the quarterfinals. America seems to domainate a lot of things but not soccer errr football so it's espcially cool to see these guys do well. Most people seem to have a sense of national pride about their teams, not me, I just think it's cool for an underdog to do well.
"I think that the United States always has seen us as inferior and it always has tried to humiliate us. And now they've really gone and done it."

I just hope this unexpected success doesn't lead to Americanization of the sport. Right now most Americans could not care less about the World Cup, and that is probably the best thing that could happen to the World Cup - at least from the perspective of the enjoyment of the rest of the world.
Or maybe I'm just feeling cynical because we bought the softcover edition of In A Sunburned Country for the book club, and it had an appendix on the Sydney Olympics that Bryson added later which I hadn't read, and I took his thoughts on the unfortunate symbiosis between the Olympics and American money to heart.

I think it is really interesting that teams from 5 continents will be in the quarterfinals. I guess I do enjoy the non-american aspects of it (no commercial breaks!) but I wouldn't mind seeing some American input into better technology to make the game less dependent on referee judgment calls at critical moments.
