A long time ago, Dan was looking for these super erector set extruded aluminum things. One of the vendors we had contacted in looking for these was
Thor Labs whose catalog makes
Edmund Scientific look like the toy catalog it really is. Thor specialized in industrial grade expensive opto-mechanical/laser/electronic stuff.. and their "Christmas Catalog" is an inch thick of techno-wonderment.. What will Santa bring me from Thor Labs? Maybe a piezo controlled XYZ flexure system (controls laser beams)..

Here in Chicago, the place to go is American Science & Surplus on Milwaukee Avenue, a dusty store filled with cool stuff and great parts from unidentifiable equipment. Their catalog is a scream, where they sell everything from Army-Surplus tank periscope prisms to bags of plastic bits. I think with their materials and enough time you could probably cobble together your own fusion tokamak.

In the mid 90's I worked with a guy that was a tank commander in Desert Storm. He kept something that turned out to be a periscope prism. Not knowing what it was, I asked and was told: "It's a tank periscope from an Iraqi tank. They were done with it."
It turns out that Russian military gear made for export was (is?) marked in both Russian and English.
