On our recent trip to Santa Cruz we went to the Santa Cruz boardwalk. The year before, we'd gone to Disney's California Adventure, and I was struck with just how much better a "boardwalk" that was; that the original paled in the face of the cliché ridden fake copy. With that in mind I offer Umberto Eco's Casablanca, or, The Clichés Are Having a Ball, on why Casablanca is such a revered film.

I am not overly fond of Casablanca and I absolutely loathe Umberto Eco, but at least he has the good sense to point out that Casablanca is not a very good film. Pity he then undermines that simple statement with his usual cloud of meaningless deconstructionism.

yes and plastic is better than wood because it won't chip and gouge.Alas it is somewhat true and Disney is the master of controled reality.
