I'm spouting lots of expletives and am about to explode for reasons that are easy to explain: I'm being subjected to the Windows XP experience, and it's leading to lots of explicit language and exposing just how bad that "operating system" is. Luckily, I was able to use Knoppix to recover the data off of the laptop I'm trying to repair, so it's just a matter of getting it working now. FSVO "working".

Aaaaugh! Okay, I can accept that XP horked up a hairball and took down the machine. I expect that. I'm okay with the idea that it wasn't able to fix itself, and instead blew away all of the software installations and created new user directories that I had to sort out later. I can deal with the fact that XP didn't have drivers for the ethernet card in the Vaio laptop, so I had to download that on another machine and burn it to CD before I could get to the network.
It is unconscionable that I had to click through the "Step 1. Read License Agreement", "Step 2. Agree To License Agreement", "Step 3. ..." pages over 10 times to get over 10 separate executable files, each of which has its own install procedures, to bring this freakin' machine up to full functionality.
If it weren't for a cowoker we needed online faster than the turnaround to send this machine back...
