Skype

2005-02-08 17:56:03.196768+00 by Dan Lyke 5 comments

I've been ignoring the calls to get Skype, but the rat boys[Wiki] got me Warcraft III, a very non-subtle "spend more time with us", and told me I needed to get Skype. So I did, and this morning Meuon and I had our first Skype call.

I'm impressed. It works, the software is what it needs to be and nothing more, the audio is fine. I need to find a really good headset, one with a high gain mic that I don't have to be breathing on to have reasonable audio (maybe I need to start looking for a good lav mic and combine that with, say, Etymotic ear buds), but so far I'm a fan.

Dan, you want to change the link above to point correctly to the Etymotic website. Older Son has a set of their earbuds and he really likes them but strongly recommends custom ear molds if you're going to be using them for any length of time. The generic ones are OK, but they do lead to some soreness long-term.

Thanks. Fixed. And good to hear the feedback, too. I have troubles in one ear with standard ear buds, so I've wondered about that. I've currently got a cheap Aiwa[Wiki] folding noise canceling headset, and it feels great and sounds... reasonable, but it's obviously not top of the line, and I want something that fits even more easily into my laptop bag.

I'm using Sony closed "Pro" headphones at work.. Dan was in stereo and sounded better than any phone call I've been on recently. - Forget size.. It's all about sound quality and volume. I can't stand 50% volume with these and I like things LOUD. With normal headphones, 100% volume is almost enough. I need better mic's for Skype and such.. I should have one or two in a box around here.. including a stereo mic... which my machine at work supports anyway. And it seems to work just as well on my Linux boxen at home.. will play more later. - But I agree. Skype works.

"Forget size..It's all about sound quality and volume." Topspin, maybe this is just a female perspective, but *my* mind's wandering! hmmmmm....and to get size AND sound quality AND volume...what a lucky girl. I need to go read salome's naughty bits now and get a fix.
