Did anyone catch this part of Tony Blair's statement about the IRA stepping down:
I welcome the recognition that the only route to political change lies exclusively in peaceful and democratic means.
Doesn't this sound a little off when the same person was calling for war as the only means of political change when the target was Iraq?

That's okay, because anyone following the situation knows that the IRA wouldn't have had any power to negotiate with if not for the violence.
Yeesh. Are people getting dumber, or am I just learning to hear what politicians are really saying?

I don't think people were ever terribly bright but I do think attention spans are dwindling. It's a combination of flashy media and high-sugar diet. I think kids who get ADD are just a little more sensitive to the inputs that are causing everyone to start to loose track of reality.

You have to deal with people in terms they understand, maybe the IRA's grown up.. but more likely they've been shown up and don't want to be associated with the really bad guys. I wish both the IRA and Britain the best of luck, as they find their differences real, but more tolerable in light of a more violent common enemy.

Of course, like any intelligent person I distrust Gerry Adams, the Irish Arafat. But then again, in the current crisis the IRA looks downright genteel and kindly. Or maybe Adams figures that in an UK with reenergized anti-terror laws his subsidiaries in drug-running and extortion might be badly affected.
