First it was the 'Di-Lithium Crystals',
and now it is
Transparent Aluminum
ala: aluminum oxynitride -- ALONtm that is making the news in the military armor circles.
"The substance itself is light years ahead of glass," he said, adding that it offers "higher performance and lighter weight."
So either the writers of Star Trek are/were aliens, from the future, or just really smart at predicting future technologies. I'm going for time travellers and think they should be arrested for it for some reason yet to be determined by guys in dark glasses. Still I'm wondering, is it too late to get a patent on Tribbles?

None of the above.
They merely pulled the descriptive names and ideas out of their asses, and we've spent the last 40 years trying to fit technologies underneath.

OK, so I was being funny, but actually I think some of these things come from some smart movie/TV show people looking into the 'what if' future worlds of good scientists and good science fiction writers.
Unfortunately, most of what passes for SciFi on TV and Movies lately is just future-stylized horror movies (Alien vs Predator), space opera (Deep Space 9) or space western (Serenity)..
Of which, E. E. Doc Smith is still my favorite "bad" sci fi writer and they have not improved upon.
