Atom, anyone?

Would those of us using the various syndication formats be okay with me dropping RSS entirely, and using Atom instead?

Yes, atom is fine. I'm about to do the same thing.

No problems here. It would be nice if the RSS feed URL still worked, with a single "Use the Atom feed" item...

Looks like Thunderbird supports Atom, so I'm fine with that.

Just do it. Enough is enough.

Sigh. Opera doesn't yet support Atom.

my feed reader doesn't yet support atom, but I could set up something like this: http://cavedoni.com/2004/02/rss1
(and, Wow! to the Cadenhead post)

Shelley does a complete rundown, including a history of the RSS board. And you'll notice that a careful reading of Dave Winer's "response" to Rogers Cadenhead's version of events doesn't reveal any contradictions.
It'll be a few days (weeks?) before I can get to tweaking the appropriate code, but I'm thinking at this point the syndicators that don't understand Atom need a little push in the right direction.
Which brings me to a bunch of my frustrations with Opera for email and messages, but that's a different entry.

NNW works just fine with Atom (yay for good tools!) so any time you switch over is fine with me.

I thought the syndication wars had ended a couple of years ago. I'm not inclined to join the fray. I've supplied syndication feeds in Atom, RSS 0.92, 1.0 and 2.0 on the last two weblog platforms I've used and I'll continue to do so. My consumption of syndication feeds is through things like My Yahoo and other similar portals and from what I've seen they support both. I'll take what I'm given and support whatever you want. Both formats give me what I look for.
