without belaboring how one's body got there, it's possible to assess the levels of neurotransmitters and stress hormones (cortisol, DHEA, also estrogens, progesterone, and testosterone which are also derived from cholesterol) in a simple urine test,, and from that determine which supplements -- nutritional precursors and ancillary vits and mins would support a body in coming around to a better balance. Neuroscience Inc. www.neuroscienceinc.com and Sanesco www.sanesco.com are places to check for details and practitioners. As a clinical nutritionist (CCN), I have several people using such nutritional supplements who had been on Rx antidepressants or whatever else to elevate (or presrve the semblance of) various neurotransmitters, including dopamine. Typical comment: "I felt so much better with the amino acids, vits & mins that I scrapped the drugs, (after years of dependency and feeling at best so so). The negative side effects of those Rx substances have also diminished."
The flaw with a lot of the testing and studies alluded to initially above is that it doesn't look at the particular nutritional and stress status of the individual above. Rather it assumes that "all have shoe sizes between 5 and 12, so if giving size 8 shoes to all doesn't promote improvement in all, shoes must not be needed. It's also roughly the equivalent of giving musical instruments to a hundred people and neglecting lessons, interest etc. then saying that since only twenty people showed any effect, it didn't avail anything.
Until the individual's biochemical status is considered (nutrient reserves, effectiveness of use, oxidation status, detox capacity, toxin load, digestive strength and more), any use of drugs is mostly hit and miss, and addresses symptoms but not causes, as good a bubble gum and bailing wire, but not a cure.

And some people either should do more, mellower drugs.. or none at all.
