NNTP is the Network News Transfer Protocol. It's the backbone for "Usenet", which is what Google Groups searches, but it's also a reasonably time-tested protocol for moving messages with expiration dates and updates around.

Defined in RFC 977[Wiki] and RFC 2980[Wiki]
