I don't think making lousy games is what's killing the game industry. Lotsa people seem satisfied with lousy game mechanics, just as lotsa people are satisfied with cheesy screenplays. Rather, when they go for graphics=better, they open up a huge production can 'o' worms. Most of the postmortems are about art teams that had to do all the artwork over again for this or that stupid reason of production. The productions have gotten too big without any process maturity to them. This is in part because the game industry bleeds people to death, so people exit the industry, taking any cumulative expertise with them.
